Hawkes Bay Herald. FRIDAY, JUNE 1, 1577.
Witu reference to Melbourne politics a Southern contemporary says : — " The policy of the Berry party, hitherto uneiiviably known as the Stonewallers, but now, since the elections, shown to represent an enormous majority of the constituencies — is not merely the continuance of Protection in the interest of native industry and not only as a means of revenue, but a policy of bursting up, as it is called, the big landed estates by means of a progressive land tax. To this end no less than 51 members out of a House of 8G have been elected. The whole constitution of the representative body has been so entirely changed, that no less than a half of the new body will be composed of new members. The revolution betokened by such an entire change may be a bloodless revolution, but it is not the less a revolution in the truest sense of the word. Democracy has triumphed over class. The wrongs of the working classes are now to be avenged, a new era has arrived, and the groaning workers of tho colony, unoppressed by tho tyranny of capital, will prove themselves to be what they have always asserted themselves as being, the true masters. These are the promises and the hopes of the party now triumphant in the elections. What the upshot will be we shall wait to see." Of one thing we may be quite certain, that is that the wave of revolution will not be long in reaching New Zealand, and the largo holders would do well to take hood to the matter and consider what concessions it would be well to make with the view of depriving it of its overwhelming force.
