Captain Baxter informs us that the Wairoa bar is improving ; in fact, he asserts that since he recommenced running between that port anel Napier, now some time back, he has never touched. He describes the channel as of a very serpentine shape, but he says there is quite enough water to allow of the Result going hi ancl out without danger of taking ground. Should the bar continue good, Wairoa may be after all not such a difficult place to get at as it is generally supposed to be. The s.s. The followng information has been received by the Government from the Board of Trade, which extends to vessels of the Kingdom of Italy the advantages held out by the 60th section of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1862. By this order it appears that vessels measured and registered in Italy shall be deemed to be of the tonnage denoted in their registers iv the same manner, ami to the same extent, and for the same purpose for which the tonnage denoted in the certificate of registry of British sailing ships is deemed to be the tonnage of such ships. In consequence of the amount of deduction for propelling power being different in the two countries, option is granted by the order to the masters of steamships of the Kingdom of Italy whereby they may elect to have the engine-room measured under the rules relating to British ships. When the engineroom is measured according to the British rules in such cases, a "certificate of British tonnage" is to be granted, adopting thereon the gross tonnage as stated in the Italian certificate of registry, and deducting from the gross tonnage the allowance for engineroom under the British rales, and also the allowance on account of spaces occupied by seamen or apprentices, antt appropriated to their use. — N.Z.
