ORIGINAL POETRY. -« .. ' A RHYME OF THE GREEK FERN. " I should like to He. down," said a little green forn, ""i am getting- too tired to stand So lonej in the sun, — would the day were done ! In this sultry and steaming land. " 1 am only one, and I grow alone, With branching and graceful stem ; Tlie calamites nigh, with leaves seeking- the sky, I claim no kindred with them." So she stretched herself out, and felt about For a couch that was soft and cool, Then laiel herself down, on a smooth patch of brown, By the side of a salt sea pool. The sun went down, and his amber crown Glared red thro" the swathing mist, And i" and out, as they rippled about, Tiny wavelets the brown earth kissed. In sunshine and storm, and every form That can take, or wind, or weather, There faithfully lay, many, many a day, Ths green and the brown together. At last, at last,— how many years past ? Is more than I ever could learn ; But deep down in the earth, where lirc-tlu'oes have birth. Were buried brown clay and green fern. And mountains arose from the earthquake's throes, And rivers flowed broad in between : And s.md and stone o'er the land were thrown, But the little fern never was seen. I vet have a line, for this ballad of mine, "My story I wish to be whole, So while passing this way, I ask you to stay, .- And look at this basket, of coal. Vor there you will see, as 'twas shown unto me, A carving, — say, how was it done ? The fern on her bed, tho' the color is fled, And the brown clay is turned into stone. Napier, May 2G. I.S.C.
