THE EAST COAST.

The Waiapu correspondent of the Poverty Bay Standard writes : — The Awanui now presents an unwonted appearance, being all astir, consequent upon the approaching completion of the buildings in connection with the boilingdown establishment of Messrs Bycroft and Ferrall, the contractors to the Government. They have gone to considerable expense in preparing for the undertaking, a powerful steam engine, iron tanks, vats, and all appliances requisite for the work, being now* on the ground and in position. They are very sanguine their venture will prove a financial success. May their expectations be realized. It is to be' regretted, it is thought, that more suitable ground could not have been found as a site for the works, those at present erected being (having regard for safety), far too close to the sea, and therefore liable, at certain seasons of the year, to be destroyed by the inroad of the ocean. Such a contingency, it is to be hoped, will not. occur ; nor that any diiiiculty will arise in the non-arrival of suitable lots of sheep, it being of vital importance that no hitch should take place to hinder the rendering down of the whole of the sheep in the district as speedily as possible, and thereby cleansing the country of that scourge, the scab. Once this desideratum is accomplished, and more of the native

lands passed through the Court, there cannot be a question that capitalists will speedily direct their attention to our fine ; depasturing country— a country, probably, that cannot be excelled in the whole of the colony. Somewhat recently, the Messrs Cattell, of Wellington, purchased the freehold of a splendid bit of country, situated at Tokomaru (Puketitiby name), at a very reasonable figure. They have expressed their desire to purchase others, so soon as they can obtain good titles, and that other • ' men of metal" from the same city are prepared to follow in their wake. When these facts are considered, one cannot but applaud the action of the Government in the matter of removing at least, one of the causes of the present non-settlement of our country.
