POST-OFFICE HOLIDAY.
Sir, — On the arrival of the s.s. Rotorua this morning with the European mail, I proceeded to the Post-office to obtain my letters. I waited for the opening of the doors from 9 a.m. to 10.45 a.m., when to my disappointment I was told by one of the Post-oflico clerks that no letters would be delivered or distributed to-day, private boxes excepted. This, Mr Editor, is doing a great injustice. If the Post-office is opened on holidays, it ought to be not only for the benefit of those who own private boxes but for the public generally. The primary object' for which boxes were established was that merchants and others having a large amount of correspondence obtain their letters, &c, with less trouble than 'in the ordinary way at the window. It appears to me that box-holders in this community are greatly privileged, inasmuch as they get their correspondence earlier than the general public, in some cases (as this for instance) 24 hours. I do know that in other colonies, when a foreign mail arrives on Sundays or holidays, and it is sorted, a clerk distributes letters at least for one hour at the window. Doing this here would be a great boon. — I am, itc, Ex-Poktmastkis. Napier, May 24, 1877.
