LONDON, May 20. The resignation of the French Ministry is owing to a complaint by Marshal M'Mahon that Jules Simon left undefended (?) the Conservative Press Laws, which the Chambev had vepealed. A Right Centve Ministry has been formed under the Presidency of the Due de Bvoglie ; Due de Lages, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Bethaul, the Minister of War, remain. A letter from Marshal M'Mahon to tho Chamber states that as two Ministries failed to uphold Conservative principles, and as he cannot associate with the Radicals, lie has resolved to maintain the status quo until 1880. The excitement in Paris has calmed, down. MELBOURNE, May 23. The Assembly has adjourned -for reelection of the Ministry. Sir Gavan Duffy is elected Speaker. It is stated that Six* J. The Loan and Mercantile Agency report, under date London, May 18, wool competition increasing. Quotations on the average aye a halfpenny to a penny better than at the opening sales. The principal advance is in superior greasy and superior combing, washed cross-bred and scoured remaining unchanged. Seedy and buvvy wools are neglected. Up to date fifty-eight thousand bales have been sold. Be tlie Ocean Mail, it was stated yesterday morning by a representative of the New Zealand Shipping Company, in the presence of Captain Watson, and uncontradicted, that the greatest possible indiscretion has been shown as to the disposal of the wreck and cargo ; that no publicity whatever was given of the day of sale ; that the wreck, with boats and gear, were sold five days after the vessel went ashore for £600, and on the following day the cargo, which was valued at £100,000, was sold fov £945. A protest signed by all the principal residents at Waitangi, has been sent to the insurance oflices interested, urging that the sale was entirely illegal, ancl that it should be held again. It is considered probable that other questions may avise to test the legality of the sale. Even the £945 has not j*et been paid over. Besides the 400 bales of wool saved, the whole coast fov miles is strewn with wool, which is being collected. The vessel broke in two about ten days ago. (FROM OUR OWN* CORRESPONDENT.) DUNEDIN, May 23. The statement that a ship was seen on fire off Cape Saunders turned out to be a complete hoax. The person who started the report informed the harbormaster with the greatest circumstantiality he had seen the ship on fire, ancl that rockets were being sent up. Acting on this report, the harbormaster sent out the tug Koputai, and the ship on fire proved to be the little steamer Ino, which was not on five, and the rockets to be the sparks from lier funnel. The Iron Age ancl steamer Jane also went out, with a large number of poople on board, the result being that three vessels burned coals fov five hours to no purposo.
