BHFhere were no arrivals or departujKrat the flKort yesterday. BBT The schooner Silver Cloud was tendered HBby the steam launch Bella yesterday morning {Hand, the "ketch Why Not. yesterday afterBBnoon / the latter when lying alongside the BBschooner bumped heavily against the former, BBand drove one of her chain plate bolts HHi^Hroxigh her side. We are glad to report, HH however, that this was the extent of the |BR injury she received. There was a heavy sea the bay yesterday, which rendered it very BJ| unpleasant for the lighters in taking in BH coals from the schooner. It is expected that schooner will require five or six more Bfl lighters before she will be able to cross the BS bar. jH The steamers Star of the South and Pretty |H Jane finished discharging yesterday, and are flflj to leave, the former for Auckland via the B£ Coast, and the latter for Auckland via BR Poverty Bay, at 8 a.m. to-day. They are ■jl both loaded with sheep. ■H The s.s. Wanaka left Auckland at 4 p,m. HJj yesterday, with 50 tons cargo for this port. BH She calls on her way down at Tauranga and flj Gisborne, and will probably arrive here at an flj early hour on Saturday morning. Captain |H Malcolm was to have resumed charge of her H at Tauranga. The Wanaka is advertised to Bfl leave for Wellington and Southern ports at BJ 11 a.m. on Saturday. We learn that the BJ local agents for the Union boats, Messrs BJ Kinross and Co., intend giving a free pass by Hj the steam launch to each passenger booked BJ at their office. This of course will be a confl sideration which intending passengers should fl avail themselves of. It is a common pracBj tice for passengers to board the steamer fl without previously taking tickets at the agent's office. We hope that the inducement fl offered will altogether do away with this bad fl system, as, until such is the case, a correct fl list of passengers cannot be obtained. The s.s. Kiwi left Wellington for this port with a general cargo at 5 p.m. on Monday, the 14th, but up till late last night she had not shown up at the Spit. There is very heavy weather on the coast, and in all probability she is taking shelter at Castle Point. The barquentine Falcon left Newcastle, N.S.W., for this port on the 10th; she should therefore put in an appearance here early next week. She is loaded with coals. We are informed by the engineer of the steam launch Bella that the addition made to her screw has visibly increased her speed. It was considered doubtful whether or not, with the increased length to her screw, the Bella's engines would be powerful enough to work it. The experiment has been tried and has been highly successful. Before the alteration was made Mr Mabbett tried her speed between the two buoys lying in the roadstead. She has not yet been timed in the same water since the alteration. Mr Mabbett intends doing so in two or three days. The Mavire will call at Preservation Inlet on her next voyage. She leaves Dunedin on Monday, 21st, touching at Lyttelton and Nelson on the 22nd and 23rd respectively. I From the following extract, taken from Dunedin "Evening Star" of the 10th inst., it will be seen that Napier is not the only port which has been visited by the heavy southerly weather experienced here during the past week : — " The S. W. gale continued to blow during the whole of last night and this forenoon with hurricane force, and some little damage occurred amongst the shipping. The barque Gloucester and ship Wild Deer, lying at the new pier, came into collision, and part of the barque's stern rails and some stanchions were carried away, while the Wild Deer's figure-head was severely damaged. The hulk Don Juan and steamers Ladybird and Phoebe parted their head moorings, swinging athwart the bank. The tug Koputai towed them clear during the afternoon."
