Iquique, on the West Coast of South America, has been destroyed by an earthquake. The debate on Mr Gladstone's resolutions has been continued. The majority of the Conservaties, with the Whigs, are for neutrality. The Liberals are divided, some favoring the dismemberment of Turkey ; others disagree with Gladstone. LONDON, May 11. Turkish accounts state that the Russians attempted to cross the Danube at Reni, near the mouth of the Pruth, but were defeated with great loss in killed, wounded and prisoners. BLUFF, May 14. The barque Win. Gifford is on shore one mile from Toi Toi. All hands saved. CHRISTCHURCH, May 14. The Li/ttelton Times says :—" We understand that Messrs. Beattie, Baylee, and Hoskins, proprietors of the Theatre Royal here, have commenced an action for libel against the Licensed Victuallers' Gazelle, in consequence of a paragraph which appeared in the last issue of that journal, reflecting very severely on the nature of the theatre building and its management. The conference on educational matters, called by the teachers of the association, was largely attended by school teachers, members of school committees, and ministers. The members of the Board of Education sent tipologies. After a lengthy discussion the following resolutions were carried ;— -" That education be free, compulsory, but religious and unsectarian, supported by a conscience clause." " That no certificate be issued to teachers on examination higher than second class, first class to be attained by success as teacher and length of servico only." "That inspectors be appointed by a central authority, and one shall be appointed chief inspector, so as to render the system of education uniform throughout the colony." " That it is desirable that the inspectors appointed should be chosen from those who have had experience in tuition. " ' ' That it is desirable to take steps to form a National Union of Teachers." " That no system of education would be complete without the establishment of secondary middle class schools, where children from public schools can proceed thence to the University. " WELLINGTON, May 14. The following are the different insurances effected on Caselberg's store and stock, burned at Masterton, yesterday : — Liverpool, London, and Globe, £1500 ; Northern, £1000 ; New Zealand, £1000 ; South British, £1000 ; Standard, £1000 ; Batavia, £500 ; Norwich Union, £500 ; Victoria, £1000 ; National, £1 500— three of which have been re-insured. The store was considered the finest in any country town in the colony. The origin of the fire is still unknown. (from our own correspondent.) WAIROA, May 14. The Mary Ann Hudson, while endeavoring to enter the Mohaka river on Thursday last, was washed on to the south beach, where she now lies at high water mark. Part of the goods were damaged. Messrs Gonnncll, Funnin and Haultain, will probably contest the Mohaka riding. Mr Gemmell will not stand in the way of a suitable candidate, but Avill himself come forward to prevent the return of a man of inferior merit. Hallett and party have commenced the survey of the Mohaka block. (from our own correspondent.) DUNEDIN, May 14. The barque William Gifford, which got injured by being forced against the bottom by an earthquake, at Oamaru, lias been heard of. She was blown past Otago Heads by the north-cast gale on Sunday, and was run ashore, one mile from Toi Toi harbor, in a sinking condition. All hands were saved. The crew had been at the pumps since Friday morning last ; there were eleven and a half feet of water in her hold at the time of coming ashore. Tugs had been on the look out for her. Much uneasiness had been felt. The N. Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have received the following cablegram from their London office, dated May 9th : — Wool : The sales opened at an average decline of Id to lid per lb on last sale prices ; greasy has declined Id per lb, and scoured and clothing, washed, 2d. Since close of last sales the principal decline has been in cross-bred. 1000 bales have been sent to the manufacturing districts direct. Trade in the manufacturing districts is unchanged. Wheat market quiet ; the quotation for Adelaide is 72s per 490 lbs, do. N.Z., 70s. Cargill, Gibbs and Co. have received information of the arrival of the J. N. Fleming, of London, on the 10th, from the Bluff, 78 days out, and the Dunedin, from Port Chalmers, on the 18th, 76 days out. To-day was a grand field day among the doctors at the Lunatic Asylum. A patient, suffering from typhoid fever, had been sent to the Asylum for insanity. He was very prostrate when sent, and could have done no harm at the hospital. He was removed on a cold day in an open express with a rug over him. All the doctors, including one who gave the order for changing his residence, said the cause of death was typhoid fever, but tho other who had concurred in the order, obstinately sticks to it that it was insanity.
