OAMARU, May 8. A raihvay accident occurred here on Saturday night, by which a man named J. S. Arthur aams killed. The particulars are as follow, .—When the doAvn train from Christchurch aams clue at 8 p.m., and Avas Avithin 550 yards of the LoAver Bell station, the driver noticed that the engine passed over some soft object, bufc thought it aams a stray sheep. The circumstance aams reported to tho station master, avlio sent a person to search. The messenger aams horror struck to find the body of a man lying alongside the track nearly severed in two. Life of course aams extinct. The deceased appeared to be about 20 years old, and had neither boots, stockings, or coat on. From papers found on his person, his name Avas ascertained, and that he arrived from GlasgoAv in February per ship Auckland. He had been at Avork in Anderson's flour mill, Dunedin, and latterly at Kakanua. He came to Oamaru on Saturday morning, and got drunk, missed the return train, and evidently started to Avalk along the line, but mistook his Avay, going North instead of South. KUMARA, May 8. A fire broke out in TubalPs general store last night. The store aams entirely destroyed, together Avith _avo private houses adjoining. The fire was prevented spreading to the adjacent buildings by the exertions of the inhabitants.
