It is stated in an Auckland paper that the Government intend proposing to Parliament in the forthcoming session that the control and management of hospitals should be handed over to borough and county councils on such terms as may be decided upon. Referring to this statement the Christchurch Press points out that hospitals are in almost all cases erected for the common benefit of several districts, and as it would be manifestly unfair that the maintenance of an institution of the kind should be thrown upon : one district only, so also it would be unsatisfactory that the management and control should be in the hands of one district to the exclusion of the other contributing districts. If, for instance, it should be decided that a hospital situated in a town should be under the control of the Borough Council of the town, the County Councils in the district contributing to the maintenance of the institution, would have good reason to be dissatisfied. The proper system evidently is the appointment of boards or committees of management (such as the one constituted for the Napier Hospital), drawing their revenues partly from local rates, partly from the consolidated revenue, and partly from charitable donations. ) — _—_— «—
