The Prince or Vladika of Montenegro, who, unlike the Russo-Servian General Tcheinayeft", defeated the Turks whenever he encountered them, and refused to make peace with the Porte when Servia did, is the last of the race of the warlike ecclesiastics who figure so prominently in mediteval history. The dignity of Vladika is hereditary in one family, the family of Petrovitch, but it passes from uncle to nephew, cousin to cousin, «Jtc. Never from father to son, for the Prince Bishop is sworn to celibacy. The territory he rules is rugged, and his people are hardy and valiant mountaineers. If the Servians had been like them, there would have been no need for Russia to have interfered. There are, however, only about 100,000 of them in all.
