The s.s. Star of the Sowth, Captain J. Carey, arrived in the bay from Auckland at 7 p.m. on Thursday. She left Auckland at 7 p.m. on Monday last, with fine weather. The weather continued fine and the winds light until her arrival off East Cape, on Tuesday, at midnight, when a strong southerly breeze sprang up, accompanied ■with a heavy S.E. sea, which lasted up till her arrival. She brought the San Francisco mail. She leaves again for the Thames at 4,30 p.m. to-day. The s.s. Bangatira, Captain Evans, discharged her cargo yesterday. She cast off from the outer wharf at 4.15 p.m., with the current running in at the rate of about eight and a-half knots. She made no headway against it for about three-quarters of an hour, but eventually she made a grand rush and made her way through it. The s.s. Kiwi, Captain J. Campbell, left the breastwork at 5 p.m. When steaming oiit, the tide, which was rushing with terrific force, caught her bow, and drove her on the edge of the boulder bank, where she remained for about a quarter of an hour. A rope was then taken ashore and made fast to a pile on the harbor works, and the steam-winch was set to work, and in a short time she was got off. The current was found to be too strong for her to make airy headway against it. She was therefore taken back to the breastwork and made fast. She was to leave at S a.m. to-day for Wellington. She has on board a large cargo, consisting of SO casks of tallow ami 100 bales of wool for Wellington, ami 242 packages for the coast, short landed on her last trip up. The s. s. Wanaka should put in an appearance early this morning. The Hon. J. D. Ormond, Minister of Public Works, will, we believe, be a passenger by her to Wellington.
