Frank Broughton, late of Wellington, but recently brought down from Napier, was charged with embezzlement from Donaid and Pascoe, brewers. A great deal of evidence was taken. On Saturday the Supreme Court granted a rule calling upon Joseph Maekay to show cause why he should not be committed for contempt of Court for ignoring the proceedings being taken in connection with his bankruptcy in the Supreme Court. TAURANGA, April 16. Sergeant Matliias, of the Armed Constabulary force, shot himself through the head with a revolver at ten o'clock this morning. He was heavily in debt to a storekeeper in town, and had received two or tliree suimnonses. It is also supposed he is wrong in his Government accounts. He was in charge of rthe Government stores. To-day, however, when the case of "Russell v. Smythies Avas called on at the Supreme Court, no one appeared, and the case was struck out. Mr Clayton, the Government Architect, is coming South to Dunedin in order to alter the Provincial Council Chambers, so as to fit them for the sittings of the Supreme Court. Local architects think the alterations in tho Provincial buildings could bo better carried out by local men. The question of linking Dunedin with the Southland railways and the great Northern line, together with the sending of ships from Port Chalmers to Lyttelton for loading, is causing great interest in commercial circles, and every prospect exists of a strong agitation commencing to press the Government to hurry on with railway works. The Hon. D. Reid will go North on Wednesday or Thursday, taking the overland route to Christchurch. Ho has managed to receive only a few deputations ; but two succeeded in interviewing him to-day. The effort to reverse the decision of the Oamaru Turf Club, re Fishhook, is regarded with general dissatisfaction, and the action of the Canterbury Jockey Club meets with approval. The road case is settled at last. Mr Bold is authorised to take over the new road as well as others, and hand them to the County Council. Dr Ormond may now close up the track along the river, which is all mit useless. Tenders will be called to-day for the erection of a native school-house and dwelling-house, to be erected at' North Clyde. The plant for the ~\Vairoa Free Press has arrived in good order. It consists of two presses, one for the paper, and a smaller one for job printing. While the Maiiaia was towing the pilot boat over the bar on Sunday morning a sea struck the boat, and she was so much damaged that she will be rendered useless.
