SYDNEY, April 9. Weather fine. The Exhibition was opened at noon to-day by the Governor, with a, brief formality. The members of the Government and of the City Corporation, the leading citizens, and a large concourse of people were present. Owing to the Live Stock Show having been deferred till the 7th instant, and the extensive machinery being in a state of unpreparedness, the exhibition presented an unfinished appearance outside. The Canadian and American courts are not yet ready, but the main building is in order, and presented an interesting spectacle. The pastoral, mining, and agricultural industries are well represented, the fine arts poorly so, but the sections representing minor industries are well filled. W. H. Watt, of Wanganui, was highly commended for wool exhibits ; two other exhibits of wool in a different class by the same exhibitor were also highly commended.

WELLINGTON, April 10. Martin Kennedy, M.H.R. , who purchased the Luna, is endeavoring to make arrangements with the authorities for landing and storing West Coast coal either on the new reclamation or on a temporary jetty to be run out from the breastwork. He is willing to j^ay the same wharfage as he would if lie berthed his vessels at the Queen's wharf. He estimates that if a staging of about 200 feet square could be run out from the breastwork, he could supply West Coast coals in ' Wellington far cheaper than Newcastle coals possibly could be landed for, while it would pay his vessels to take back cargoes of goods from Wellington to Greymouth at so cheap a rate that it would answer the West Coast towns just as well to import from Wellington as from < Melbourne. i Tenders for the extensiod of the Queen's ;

wharf are advertised for. The plans have been submitted to several engineers and approved of. The tenders are for widening the main wharf and for the extension of aT. The job will cost fully £70,000.
