WAIROA.

DfBOH OITH OWIT CORRESPONDENT. | December 9, 1870. I am glad to be able to • tell you that we have at length got rid of our Ureweras ; but an incubus still remains, in the presence among us of Rewi te Nau and Kuare (ex Chatham Islanders), who, for reasons unknown to the uninitiated, were prevented from accompanying the other prisoners, per Hero, to Napier, and were sent back to their original abiding place, Wbakaki. These men were, confessedly, amongst the most active and villainous of Kooti's gang — the latter being dignified with the title of ''executioner" ; and why (others being deported) these remain, passes my comprehension. A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump ; and these quondam disciples of a clever rascal are capable of much mischief where they nre. ! To the northward, at Mahia and its vicinity, whaling has begun under indifferent auspices, westerly weather, &c. The boats have been several times in chase, hitherto unsuccessfully. Apropos of this, a grampus (upoko Kue) was thrown ashore at Whnkamalii, about two miles south of Wairoa, on Tuesday last, and was promptly captured and "cut in " by the residents. It will, probably, yield from 25 to 30 gallons of oil. Colonel St. John, accompanied by Sergt.Major Goldsmith, of the Turanga Mounted Volunteers, and six troopers of the same corps, arrived from Poverty Bay yesterday, by the inland track via Te lieinga. They report the road, from disuse, ns being much grown over; so much so, indeed, as to necessitate cutting through in some places. We have become somewhat incredulous as to the existence of a Provincial Engineer ; and the state of the town and neighbouring roads and bridges justifies incredulity. The latter tremblingly testiy, to any passer over, their extreme feebleness. There is one example in the centre of Clyde, which is oscillatory to a remarkable extent, and will apparently remain so, until some Ourtius of a carter disappears in the gulf formed by its break down, and involuntarily makes himself a sacrifice for district good.
