The Telegraph-is now completed, and communication open, as far as Tauranga. | Napier Rifle Volunteers. — The monthly inspection of the above company will take place on Wednesday (to-morrow) evening, at 6 o'clock. Native Lands Court. — Messrs. Rogan, Locke, Cooper, and other gentlemen who attended the recent sitting of the Native Lands Court at Turanganui, returned to Napier by the Keera, yesterday morning. Havelock Races.— -We are requested to state that the Havelock races will be held in the paddocks of Messrs. Reynolds and M'Hardy, instead of in that of Mr. Bee, the object of the change being to get a longer and a bettter course. Volunteer Band.— The Rifle Volunteer Band gave one of their pleasing open-air concerts on the afternoon of Saturday last. Owing, no doubt, to the threatening appearance of the weather, there were not nearly so many people present as on former occasions. .A steady rain set in before the programme was finished, which compelled the Band to leave the ground. The Meaneb Bridge, as will be seen from advertisement, will be closed on this (Tuesday) and the two following days, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., to enable the contractor to replank the bridge. This work was very much wanted ,• but we cannot help thinking that longer notice of the partial stoppage of traffic might have been given to persons interested. Sudden Death. — We regret to record the sudden death, at Wangaehu, on Thursday last, Bth insfc., of Mr. John Charles, landlord of the Commercial Hotel, Port Ahuriri, at the early age of 33 years. The deceased had not been in the best of health for some weeks past, and on Sunday, 4th inst., he proceeded in the schooner Three Brothers to Wangaehu for a trip. The vessel arrived at her destination on Wednesday night, and on the following morning Mr. Charles went ashore for a stroll. About 4 p.m., the schooner having completed loading, the crew went off ia a boat for Mr. Charles, but found that he had suddenly expired a few minutes before the boat reached the beach. The cause of death is said to have been apoplexy. The body, we are informed, was interred at Porangahau. Deceased leaves a wife and two children to mourn his untimely end.
