RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Tuesday, June 21. (Before Singleton Eochfort, Esq., R.M.) LAHCENY. Hare Toeotoro was charged with stealing a piece of line, of the value of 65., from the shop of Michael Boylan. The prisoner confessed the crime, and stated that ho was intoxicated at the time. It appeared that on the previous day the prisoner went into Mr. Boylan's shop aud examined some ploughs. Mr. Boylan saw him take a piece of line from the shop, but did not suspect him of any intention of stealing it, but on his returning to the shop without it Mr. Boylan asked him where it was P Prisoner said the line was in the shop, but Mr. Boylan, on making a search, found it in the prisoner's cart. The magistrate ordered the prisoner to pay four times the value of the property. The money was at once paid by his father, Paora Torotoro. ASSAULT. I Rainania was charged with assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty. The prisoner attempted to rescue Hare Torotoro when he was given into the custody of constable Heberly by Mr. Boylan. William Heberly deposed that the prisoner was very violent, and tore his coat, which would cost £2 10s. to replace. Fined £205., and £2 10s. for tho coat. CIVIL CASES. Higgins v. McCarthy. — Claim for £18 135., balance of an account for goods sold. Defendant pleaded insolvency, and produced the Gazette containing notice of his insolvency. The proceedings were ordered to be stayed.
