Total Abstinence. — A meeting of tbe Hawke's Bay Total Abstinence Society will take place this evening, when a lecture will be delivered on the temperance question. Supreme Court. — We are requested to state, with regard to the concluding remarks of his Honor's charge, with reference to the case of a man named Hughes, who had been committed for trial from Poverty Bay, " that the country had no doubt been put to great expense," — that such was not the case, notice having been some weeks since served upon the whole of the witnesses by the proper officer, warning them that their attendance would not be required, as it wa3 not the intention of the Crown Solicitor to present a bill to the Grand Jury, and that accordingly none of the witnesses were in attendance.
