WANGANUI.

Fbiday, April 8. A large public meeting was held here last night, and the following resolutions were carried amidst great enthusiasm: — 1. That this meeting has seen with deep regret and alarm, that an order has been issued by the commanding officer of 'the district, permitting the natives again to settle on. the Waitotara block. That, in the opinion of this meeting, such order, if carried out, will effectually prevent the occupation of the district, by creating well-founded feelings of distrust and in~securtTy^ — Thnirtiriy-ui Jljl ia muJu iv Jiy-j tinct violation of the views expressed by the House of Representatives, on the petition presented last session from the settlers of the district ; and is also a breach of the most positive assurances on Mr. Pox's fmrt, that the natives should never be alowed to return to the block in question. 2. That in case the Government persist, in defiance of the wishes of the Assembly, in utter disregard to the interests of the settlement, and in spite of their own solemn promises, in allowing the Maoris to return to the Waitotara block, it will be the imperative duty of the settler?, for their own safety, to frustrate, at whatever sacrifice, any such attempt. An Armed Association is to be formed, and the settlers are determined that not one native shall be allowed to settle on the block. Great indignation and excitement are felt.
