Mb. Edward. Ltndon will hold a wool sale this day ; afterwards, a clearing sale of merchandise, &c. Abstinence Society. — A meeting of persons interested in the formation of a Totalj Abstinence Society was held in St. Paul's school-room on Tuesday evening last. Mr. Tennenfc'was voted to the chair. Speeches were delivered by Mr. John Harding and several other gentlemen, who pointed put in a most. forcible manner the advantages; of. such societies. Resolutions were .passed instituting the society, also adopting the following pledge, "We do agree to discontinue and discountenance the use of all intoxicating drinks as beverages." Mr. R. C. Harding was appointed Secretary to the Society, and a large number of those present signed the declaration. A meeting of members was appointed to be held on Tuesday, 12th instant, for the election of office bearers. Colonial Honobables. — The Gazette contains the following despatch :—Downing street, 13th December, 1869.— Sir,— - I have received your Despach No. 124, of the 18th September last, recommending that the members of the late Ministry of New Zealand, viz., Messrs. E. W. Stafford, W- Fitzherbert, J. Hall, J. C. Richmond, and Colonel T. M. Haultain, should be permitted to retain the title of Honorable ; and to acquaint, you that the Queen has been graciously pleased to approve of those gentlemen retailing the title within jSTewv-Zealand.
