Those who have watched anxiously our commercial intereßtH for the last twelve • months, will readily see the marked improvement, more especially within the last three or four months. Greater revenues have been received in each of these past months than in any of the same months in any preceding year. It is still to be regretted in one sense that the consumption of spirits is not lees every month, the duties on this article being immensely out of proportion to other articles. It is our intention to compile a return shewing the proportionate amount of spirits con* sumed by each adult in this province. The Customs duties for the last month amounted in the aggregate to £2264 6s. lid. The greater part of that is for spirits, being 1785 gallons, £1071 4s. lOd. Next is sugar, 66,7311b5, £278 Os. lid. Tobacco is next noted, being 12221b5., £152 15a. Next we have to record an artiole which was fast going out of our market as reviving and which Bhows up well in duty, and that is bottled beer, being 2915 gallons, £183 3s. 9d. Then comes wine, 554: gallons, £111 10a. 3d. We find in wines that sherry and port is not so much sought after as the Australian wine, which has been gaining great notoriety, especially brands like some imported lately, which we certainly commend as the best ever imported to this province, combining both lightness and excellence of taste. Tea is the next artiole adding to the revenue, £85 13s. 6d. ; then ooffee, £4 45. ; the rest being made up of goods by measurement and weight.
