Hawke's Bay Herald TUESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1869.

That great trunk roads throughout the centre of the Northern Island are the oue thing needful for the permanent pacification of the country, is what every one will admit. Without doubt, in New Zealand, as in other countries whose history is upon record, the construction of a good military road is at once a powerful instrument in the pacification of the iuterior, and a sure prelude to the extension of the arts of peace. The Assembly took this view when, last session, they voted a large sum for main trunk lines in the Northern Island, and we are glad to learn that steps are being taken to carry out such vote. It is intended, we believe, upon the cessation of hostilities, to employ the Constabulary generally in the making of these trunk lines j and, meanwhile, orders have been sent through the General Government agent for the detachment stationed at Haroto, or jgart of it, some thirty men, to begin the work iv the neighborhood of that post. The idea, we apprehend, is — and, doubtless, it is the true oue— to have a strong post in the centre of the island, with roads radiating from it. A small beginning has been, or is about to be, made in this direction ; aud we hope shortly to be able to announce operations of a more comprehensive character.
