Hawke's Bay Herald TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1869. NEWS BY THE MAIL.

The news, this monthj has little special interest for the Colony, and no sensational items of any kind. It gives us much pleasure, however, to be able, tit last, to record ;,an advance in the price of our staple, commodity, wooL At, the August sales the bidding, we. are told, was spirited, and closing prices shewed a considerable advance in the prices of Sydney and Victorian. While the English Government continue obdurate in their refusal to afford any military aid to New Zealand, strong expressions of opinion in favor of the colony were being nttered by persons of position, and a gradual change of feeling was evidently taking place in the public mind. Some sections of the press, it will be seen, have expressed themselves very strongly on the subject; and we may fairly assume that, by the time the news reaches home of the removal of the Stafford. Ministry and the abandonment of the selfreliant farce, the public of England, if not the Government, will receive the intelligence with favor, and be prepared to meet the straightforward proposals of the Fox Ministry.
