ARRIVAL OF H.M.S. BLANCHE, FROM SYDNEY.
(From the " Independent," Oct. 2.) H.M.S.S. Blanche, Captain Montgomerie, from Sydney, arrived in this harbor last night, after a passage of nine days. She left Sydney on Wednesday, the 22nd ultimo, in company with the surveying schooner Edith. The Blanche towed the Edith out of Sydney harbour, and then casther off*. Fine weather was experienced until 1 Tuesday the 28th ult., when a succession of heavy squalls from the S.W., with rain, was encountered for two days, during which time the vesselsparted company. Arrived off Cape Farewell on Thursday last, at 2 p.m., and sighted the Edith on Friday morning, took her in tow and brought her into port. During the passage, a seaman named Paul Powell fell overboard, .when Mr. Williams, the boatswain, immediately jumped after him, and succeeded in rescuing Him from a waterygrave. H.M.S.S. Challenger was in Sydney refitting when the Blanche left. The Edith is in command of Lieut. Woods, and has been purchased for the purpose of surveying the coast of New Zealand. The Serald of the 22nd Sept., in its commercial intelligence, states that advices from California seemed to have strengthened the breadstuff's market, as small sales of Adelaide silk-dressed flour were made at £17 10s to £18, and California £16. Fo sales of wheat were reported ; the stock in first hands is very light. The Sydney Herald of the 21st says : ■— -The Siwa, from San Francisco, with 400 tons flour, arrived this afternoon, bringing news to July 23rd, and advising the Faraway as loading for Sydney, with about 600 tons of flour. Private letters report that no other vessels are likely to come forward, as there are no Australian orders in the marked and all the new wheat offering was being purchased for shipment to England. . « . , j
