The s.s. St. Eilda, Fox, commander, left Napier on the night of the 21st ult., with Ngatiporoua for the East Coast. Landed Major Withers at Wairoa next morning at daylight, and proceeded on to Poverty Bay, and arrived there at 4 p.m. on the 22nd, but owing to heavy southerly wind 1 and rain had to steam over to the Murewai for shelter. Next day, the weather moderated, and she steamed back to Turanganui, and having communicated with the authorities there, proceeded up the coast, landing natives as she went along at their different settlements, viz., Tologa Bay, Mawhai, Waipara Bay, Tuparoa, Awanui, and* East Cape, anchoring off the latter place at 6 p.m,,on the 24th, at which time it was blowing very hard round the Cape. Next morning, steamed round to the chief Morgan's place, and to Kawakawa, landing stores, &c. On the 25th, returned southward, calling in at Tuparoa; passed the s.s. Star of the South about thirty miles south of East Cape, and arrived at Poverty Bay at 12.30 a.m on the 26th, landing stores and taking in mails. Left at 10 a.m., calling at Wangawhei and landing.stores, which place she left at 2 p.m., arriving off the Wairoa at 7 p.m. Being dark and too muoh swell on, she proceeded onwards, and arrived in the roadstead at 11,30 p.m., and entered the Iron Pot at 9 a.m. yesterday. The s.s. Rangatira left Dunedin at 4.30 a.m. on the 22nd instant, having moderate S.E. and N,E. winds, and arrived at Lyttelton at 5.30 a.m. on the 23rd. Left again same day at 1.30 p.m., and experienced fresh head wind andN.E.seato Wellington, arrivingthere at noon on the 24th. Left Wellington at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday, had light northerly winds and fine weather, and anchored; in the road-. steacLat 12,30 p.m. yesterday,' She brings a
full cargo for this port and Auckland, and a large number of passengers. The s.s. Star of the South' steamed for Auckland on Friday night, ■with a cargo of live stock. The fast and regular trading cutter Mahia will proceed to Wairoa, after taking in cargo. The St. Kilda proceeds today to Wellington, with a supplementary English mail from this port. The clipper ketch Wild Duck clears at the Customs today for the Thames goldfields direct. The N.Z.S N. Co.'s s.s. Rangatira arrived in the roadstead yesterday at midday from Wellington, and will . proceed on to Auckland after discharging" her inward cargo. The N.Z.S.N. Co, 'a s.s. Wellington may be looked for towards the end of the week from the South. The R. T. Turnbull, . ship, from London direct, now 86 days out, may be fairly looked for.
