IMPORTANT INTELLIGENCE.

THE KAIMANAWA CEDED; TO THE GOVERNMENT. N We mentioned a short time ago that Mr. Ormond had been authorised by the Government and Dr., Featherston, on behalf .of the Wellington province,; to, negpciate for the* opening of the KaimanaWa fo^igging, and that •we understood that 1 Mr. Locke had gone to Taupo, for. the purpose of carrying out the arrangements. Intelligence was received yesterday from Mr. Locke, at Haroto, that the native proprietors of theEaiinanawa district have handed over the whole country by deed-to the Go vernment for mining purposes. The extent of the country ceded will be recognised when we - state that; the boundaries commence at the church, on the Mehaka river, thence along by the Taupo road to Runanga; thence to Hatepe, on the shore of Lake Taupo; thence by Taupo Lake to Tbkano; thence under Ruapehu by the desert and tberbad from Patea to Ahuriri, to the Ngaruroro Gorge at Kuripapanga; thence to the Mohaka river and down the Mohaka river to the starting point. A deed had been sighed by the native proprietors, handing over all the country for mining. The district, however —as a necessary precaution under the circumstances—will not be open for mining purposes until regulations have been prepared, and the district declared to be open by the Government. Instructions have been given to the commanding officer at Taupo to stop • any-pet-son or party'from going on the land meanwhile, as such might lead to complication and difficulties in the war operations now being conducted there. The district will be declared open as soon as this can be done with security. Mr. Locke is on his way back from Taupo, and is expected to arrive in town to-day. Capt. William M'Donnell is also expected in Napier in a day or two. When last heard of, he had gone to pay a second visit to the reef from which he obtained the rich specimens to which allusion has been so often made.
