HEEAID TELEGRAMS.

■NELSON.

' Wednesday, Sept. 22. Mb. Curtis, M.H.R., addressed a public meeting! qfUthe: eleotors .of this city last night. • There was a large audience. The hon. gentleman defended the policy and proceedings of the Stafford Government, and in criticising the present Ministry, took special exception to the Fox-McLean Native policy, which he predicted would be the source of future trouble, and said that the present lull was but the prelude to future dire disasters. Turning to matters of finance, he compared the expenditure for thirteen months under the Stafford regime with Mr. Fox's proposed expenditure for the year, but included in the latter estimate the £70,000 which is proposed to be applied for raising a force which is to be enrolled in Great Britain, which sum is not to be spent this year: he also estimated the cost of troops at fully £60,000, instead of £25,000, Mr. Vogel's estimate. The speech was well delivered, but the reception of the speaker was markedly cold, the audience never applauded less.

Mr Greenwood, the Sergeant-at-arms in

the House of Representatives, put a question to Mr Curtis, asking — If the revenue was short of the expenditure, how was the deficiency made up ? Mr Curtis replied that the Government obtained power to issue Treasury bills for £340,000 in excess of the ' actual revenue. Mt. Greenwood also proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Curtis: this prominent anti-Ministerial action on the part of the Sergeant-at-arms,

is the subject of considerable public comment. '

Mr. Redwood's race-horses,— Manuka, Peeress, and Misfortune, — leave to-night in the s.s. Omeo, for Melbourne, where all three are entered for events at the Cup meeting. All three are in good condition, but Manuka, which is a strong favorite for the Melbourne Cup, is in splendid form.
