Hawke's Bay Herald TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1869. THE KAIMANAWA GOLD FIELD.
In another column we extract from the Evening Post an account of the analysation of the specimens of quartz brought by Capt. M'Donnell from the Kaimanawa range, and of a formal claim for the reward offered by the Provincial Government of Wellington having been sent in on behalf of that gentleman and his co-discoverer. The result of the analysis is most satisfactory. Of four samples exhibited, three are described as " richly auriferous," and no doubt seems to exist among those best informed that a payable gold-field has been discovered. The locality is admitted on all hands to be more easily accessible from Napier than from any other centre of population ; and all that really stands in the way of pros? pecting is the nest of ruffians who have congregated in the neighborhood, whose vicinity would not only involve personal danger but would interfere with negociations with the rightful owners. Fortunately that nest seems in a fair way of being rooted out ; late accounts from Taiipo indicate au intention to attack Te Kooti with a strong force. Let us hope that the attack will be successful, and that, very soon, the fearful barrier to peace and prosperity, involved in the existence of this man and his bloodthirsty gang, may be swept away for ever. Good times seem again to be dawning upon the colony, and the day of prosperity would break all the more rapidly could a secure peace once be established. Let us see what a few days will bring forth.
