Mohaka. — Mr. Daniel Beany has been appointed ferryman at Mobaka ; appointment to date from 31st July. Kaikoea. — Messrs. Eoutledge, Kennedy, and Co. will sell, to-morrow, at Kaikora, sheep, cattle, and horses. Poverty Bay Militia. — Lieut. W. H. Tucker is promoted to be captain, and Alexander Butters appointed ensign, in the Poverty Bay Militia. Waipukubau. — - Divine Service will D.V., be conducted next Sunday by the Rev. A. Shepherd at Waipukurau at 11 a.m. ; at Waipawa at 3 p.m. ; and at Kaikora at 6 p.m. Educational Rate. — This rate, according to proclamation in a Provincial Government Gazette, is made payable on the 20th October next. We have received numerous protests against the payment ot the same from persons who say, and say truly, that there is no common school in Napier to which their children can be sent. Tkial of Rebel Natives. — True bills were found in the Supreme Court at Wellington on the 2nd inst., against three natives alleged to have been concerned in the Poverty Bay massacre, and who were indicted for high treason under the Treason Felony Act. They will be tried on Monday next, 20th September. Fire. — On Saturday afternoon the house at Raukawa, owned by Mr. J. McDougall, was wholly destroyed by fire, nothing whatever having been saved. The fire is supposed to have originated in some defect in the chimney. Mr. Robert McDougall and a married couple engaged as servants were on the premises at the time of the accident. J The Two Deai> Bodies, to the finding of which we have already referred, proved to have been made the subject of an inquest and buried before Corporal Farmer could reach the scene. The one, reduced to a skeleton, is supposed to be the remains of one Henry Edward Wark, who was committed to Napier Gaol on the 4th February 1867 for burglary and forgery, and got a free pardon on the 10th August 1868. The other body was that of one Roberts, a shepherd in the employ of Mr. Drury, and well known in the neighborhood. A Stowaway. — Yesterday, at the Resident Magistrate's Court, a man named Alfred Smith was charged with being a stowaway on board the steamer Wellington, on her passage from Wellington. Smith was fined £3 and costs, and, in default, was sentenced to seven days imprisonment with hard labor. Bell's Life in Melbourne. — We have received the earlier numbers of an ably conducted illustrated sporting paper bearing the above designation. Statistical Tables. — We have received from the Registrar General a copy of the statistical tables, published in anticipation of the annual volume of statistics of Jtfew Zealand, for the year 1868. This volume is moat carefully compiled, and well printed, and contains a large extent of valuable information. The Superintendency. — It will be seen from announcement in another column that the members of the Provincial Council are requested to meet on the 24th inst., for the purpose of electing a Superintendent in lieu of Donald M'Leau, Esq., resigned.
