Mejcboukne Cup. — Manuka, a New Zealand horse, is a strong favorite for the Melbourne Cup, the great race of the year in Victoria. Rifle Volunteehs. — The monthly inspection of the Napier Rifle Volunteers takes place on Monday next, at 4 p.m. Dkowned. — We learn that on Sunday 29th August, a seaman named Bill, or " Little Billy," was washed overboard from the schooner Colonist, which left this port for Auckland on the day named. The accident occurred off Portland Island. As there was a heavy sea it was impossible to attempt to save the unfortunate man. Prospecting and Mining Company. — The demand for shares in the Hawke's Bay Prospecting and Mining Company has exceeded the expectations of the most sanguine. Out of the 800 shares to be allotted out of 1000, 770 have already been applied for, and applications are still coming in. Pending the registering of the company and other preliminary arrangements, much cannot be done, but we understand the provisional directors sent by the Rangatira for one of the Messrs Sweeney (now at the Thames, but formerly resident here) to take charge of the company's prospecting and other operations. A. very sanguine feeling prevails as to the future of the new company. /
