An Illustrated Newspaper. — The colony can boast of more than one illustrated newspaper. One of these— the Examiner ', published at Nelson, has been received, and seems a creditable production. - :-- --[ Abms Act. — -Mr. Inspector Scully haa been re-appointed the officer to lay information and take proceedings under the Arms Acts. Whooping Cough. — This harassing disease still remains in our midst. About twelve children have fallen victims to it in Napier alone. The Fire at Waipawa, in which the Sedgwick Arms was consumed, would appear to have arisen in a lean-to in which some material was being dried for the purpose of making matrasses. Mrs. Couper barely escaped with her life, her door having had to be broken open. Five men (lodgers) upstairs, had also a very narrow escape ; they all lost their swags^ We regret to hear that Mr. Couper, who is very industrious and generally liked, will be a loser to the extent of between £200 and £300 over and above his insurance. Velocipedes. — Messrs Cousins and Atkins, coachbuilders of Auckland, are preparing a number of bycycles or twowheeled velocipedes for sale. Count de ia Roncieee, late Governor ' of Tahiti, who arrived here by the Lord Ashley on Tuesday from Auckland, visited the House of .Representatives last night. His intention to do so was announced by Mr. Fox in the afternoon, and on his arrival about half-past eight, he was mot at the door by several hon. mem. bers and conducted to the Speaker's chair. Sir David received him and introduced him to the Houso, after which lie took a chair and remained for about an hour watching the proceedings.-— Evening Post, Aug. 12.
