Gold. — __ie Wdvrarapa Mercury draws attention to ' ah advertisement, calling a publio meeting itl Greytown, to consider the advisability of prospecting this district. It has never, yet been properly done, and we should like to see a company formed to test tho numerous quartz reefs that are known to exist. Fires have been lately seen in the bush hills at the back of Mr. Jackson's Tauherenikau, and it is supposed that some persons are prospecting quietly. We extract the following from a paper read by Mr. J. C. Crawford, at -the iaeeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society, published in the Wellington Independent. — "If, on the East side, we consider the wearing away which has scooped out the valleys of the Tauherenikau, the Waiohine, the "Waingawa, the Waipaua, and the Ruamahunga, we may reasonally expect that, supposing the rocks are to any extent auriferous, and the fall and force of water are sufficient, that gold must.have beon carried out and deposited somewhere in the Wairarapa Valley." Is the Moa Extinct ?— Dr. Hochstetter says that in inaccessible solitudes there might still be some few living stragglers of that giant family " the last of the Mohicans " and that Heretaungain the vicinity of Ahuriri was or is the heart of the lasfc living Moas. The party who have just returned to Rangitikei from Ruahine Range (a part never traversed by, the pakeha) state that on two occasions they feel certain that they saw a giant bird stalking up one of the rugged peaks ; at first 'sight they took it to be a horse or bullock from the size, but a closer inspection proved it to be a bird. , The natives state that ..the moa had a fleshy sort of foot with projecting toes, snablingitto travel over snow or,, soft ground. The men who saw , it state that it travelled fast, by a kind of a bound, going oyer a (".pace, of 20 feet at a time, The. party . intend' shortly gph|g back tb endeavour to secure, ""tlje ; inoa.'- If tho attempt is successful such a bird will \ be viewed with interest by all naturalists.
