Hawke's Bay Herald. TUESDAY, AUGUST 10, 1869. ENGLISH MAIL.

The English mail, not due in New Zealand till Wednesday next, the 11th inst., arrived unexpectedly yesterday afternoon — the Rangitoto having made her number off Hokitika at 50 minutes past two p.m. Unfortunately [as has happened on several similar occasions] the weather was so severe that communication with the shore was impracticable. It was expected, however, that this would be effected about 1 1 p.m., in which case the news would be flashed before morning to the principal newspapers in the colony.

We shall lose no time, after receipt of our telegraphic despatch, in placing it before our readers— only regretting that the inland mails must take their departure this morning without the news.

After the above was in type a later telegram came to hand, to the effect that the mail could not be landed last evening. It may, therefore, be late to-day before the telegrams come to hand.
