By their departure and inearcera^i tion in the hulk off Wellington, thfrcdast right on from tho Kai Iwi .-streajnto the Patea river is clear. The spring is fast approaching, and the sooner tho Waitotara settlers return tp.th'eir lan4 r in tho absence of those miscreants, who, wo hope, will never return, the better. The Waitotara settlers have the protection of the Wanganui Volunteer Veterans under Captain ICells, and the Kailwi Cavalry under Captain Bryce, but they should not return to their ruined homesteads : as isolated individuals. .Let them meet aid' determine to return in a body, eacfc /iojua '" ruined homestead, each to erect a temporary residence^ keep a horse ready to * mount at any moment, and have a system of day and night signals established which would enable the whole to concentrate quickly whenever the enemy y pufc in an appearance. This we would recommend « as a mere precautionary measure," not' that we apprehend the slightest danger now that those 96 traitors have been-wc4 ported from tho districts v Even that number, if at large, might for years to con\e prowl in tens, twenties, tifties,;o"r any othor number over the country between the Kai Iwi stream and the Patea river t commit depredations, and keep; the settlers in a constant state of alarmi
