The division was taken on Mr. Stafford's amendment to the" troopa resolution, at half-past 2 this niorning, and was ldst by four votes— the numbers being 35, Js, the Government thus getting a majority of four. For the last two days the oppositldn having been speaking against time, to prevent the decision going by to-day's mail to England. The following is the division list :— For Government — 31. Messrs. Brown O'Rorke Bolleston (From the Telegraphic Correspondent of the "Southern Cross. ) The committee divided at 2*30 this morning on Mr. Stafford's amendment on Mr. M 'Lean's first resolutions. The amendment was negatived — 31 to 27 votes. Progress was then reported. Either in committee or on the report to the House, Government will adopt Ormond's resolutions, in lieu of their own. The debate on Thursday night was very disorderly and bitter. Several scenes took place. Mr. Wallace has resigned; he never took his seat. J. C. Brown, Goldfields M.P.C., Qfcago, is a candidate. (FfiOM ANOTHER COEBESPONDENT.) Saturday. The division last night on the troops question gave the Government a majority of four. The majority will be larger on Mr. Ormond's amendment. This is the last trick of the opposition. ! FBOM OUB OWIT COBBKSPONDEHT.I Monday, August 9. Mr. Booth has gone to Upper Wanganui and Patea to fetch witnesses for the trial of the Maori prisoners, which is expected to take place in a fortnight. There is no political news. On Sunday morning there was a fire in Russell's music warehouse. Nothing was saved. The property was partially insured.
