Hawke's Bay Herald. FRIDAY, AUGUST G, 1869.
It has often occurred to us, upon seeing the large amouut of labor performed by the hard labor gang on various occasions, that the men, instead of being employed in a desultory manner and in different places, might, with incalculable advantage to the province, be permaneutly engaged in running out a breakwater from Ahuriri BluflF. Although without engineering data upon which to base an opinion, we believe such a work to be quite practicable. A work of long time, no doubt, but still not a chimerical one. With material in any quantity, and with, as we understand, a reef running out from the Bluff in the direction of Pania rock, an undertaking of this nature might be well worthy of a commencement, even if it took half a century to complete it» Its completion would form a new era in the history of the East Coast — a tiling quite possible, although the settlers of the present day are unlikely 1 to see it. Some years ago an elaborate survey of Bay and Harbour was made by Mr. Bousfield, iv which the soundings of every part were carefully laid down. What has become of it ? Much valuable information, especially now that tho " Pot" is siltiug up and the harbour is threatened with destruction, might be gained therefrom.
