THE WAR

Colonel Herrick, accompanied by Capt. Bower, M^jor Withers, as paymaster, and other officers, proceeded to Wniroa on Saturday by the p.s. Sturt. Colonel Ilerrick goes with instructions to abandon the Waikaremoana expedition. TheSturt will enter the river and take part of the Ngatiporou out to the open, where they will be . transhipped on board the St. Kiida, which will take them to their homes. The Sturt is expected back to-day. Tomorrow, should all go well, the Sturt and St. Kilda will both rendezvous again at Wairoa. The latter will take home the remainder of Ngatiporou ; the former will bung on to Napier, for purposes of frontier defence, 100 men of the armed constabulary. The remainder of Herrick's force, after providing sufficiently for the safety of Wairoa and Poverty Bay, will come to Napier, there to await orders. A considerable force will, it is expected, be stationed on the Taupo frontier ; and the telegraph will be pushed on with all despatch to the Taupo open country.
