Hawke's Bay Herald. FRIDAY, JULY 2, 1869. THE NEW MINISTEY.
We need not say how much pleased we are to see a change of ministry at length brought about, more especially to see Mr. M'Lean minister for defeuce and native nffiiiis. If ever the right mau was piit iii tbe rigbt place, assuredly it is Mr. VlLeau iv the office to which he has beon appointed. We do not, however, herald his accession to power with a flourish of trumpets, preferring that the results of ministerial action shall speak for themselves. We know, moreover, the difficulties that lie iv his way, more especially the state of financial exhaustion consequent ou the labored attempts of the late Ministry to wage war on a large scale in a desert region, in the midst of a New Zealand winter — involving, as this has done, an expense far beyond the shattered means of the colony. Still, we are sanguine that the knowledge, experience, aud sound judgment of Mr. M'Lean and his associates "in office will do something towards rescuing this unhappy colony from the terrible condition to which it has been reduced by gross mismanagement. . Certain we are that confidence has been already greatly strengthened by the accession to office of the new Ministry. At. the time of the departure of the Wellington the vacant ministerial seats had beeu to all intents filled. The cabinet, when complete, will contain the names bf two influential southern members ; so that the sneers indulged in by the Stafford organs, here and in Wellington (they don't seem to exist anywhere else) as to Mr. Fox's failure to form a Ministry, are wholly without foundabi6n. We have reason to believei indeed, that a very strong Ministry has. be.en formed, one that will command the confidence of the House as well as of the country. The ministerial statement, as received by electric telegraph, was published by us on Wednesday as an extra. The statement in full, as it will appear in next number of the New Zealand Hansard, will be found in another column.
