The Queen's Book. — The last mail | from England brought an exceedingly valuable addition to the General Assembly Library in the shape of a copy of her Majesty's book, entitled "Leaves from the Journal of our Life in the Highlands," presented to the Library by her Majesty through Sir George Grey. The volume is splendidly bound in green and gold morocco, and is highly illustrated — the frontispiece being an engraving of Balmoral Castle. The inscription is in her Majesty's beautifully bold handwriting, and is as follows : — To the Library of tho General Assembly of New Zealand from Victoria Begina. The book was given by her Majesty personally to Sir George Grey for transmission to the colony.— Independent, The Alpacas. — We observe by a notice in the Provincial Govevnmient Gazette that two tenders have been received by the Government for the purchase of these animals, one by the Otago Acclimatization Society offering £30. f0r three, and the other by Mr. John Harding, who offered £10 for four. Both tenders have been refused. — Independent. New Zealand Flax. — Seeds of the New Zealand flax (Phormium-Tenax), are being sold in considerable quantities in London. Amongst the favorite varieties are the Brown-edged, Red-edged Varie-gated-leaved, Black-edged, and the si\perb Scarlet-edged.
