THE LATE EXPEDITION.

■ ACKNOWLEDGMENT OP SERVICES OF MILITIA AND VOLUNTEERS. 1 The following correspondence has been | handed us by the acting agent for the 1 General Government : — General Government Office, Napier, May 12, 1869. 1 Sib, — I have the honor of transmitting ! to you for publication a letter which I > have had the pleasure to receive from the i Hon. the Defence Minister, acknowledge , ing the great satisfaction with which the Government have received the reports of the conduct of the Militia and Volunteers on the occasion of the Mohaka attack. I avail myself of the opportunity of expressing my own feelings of admiration at i the bearing not only of the Militia and ; Volunteers, but of the inhabitants of the - town and neighbourhood generally, at the moment of alarm, and during a protracted period of armed precaution, when so many sacrifices had to bo endured. Speaking for myself personally, I have 1 to acknowledge with grateful feelings the > kind and hearty support which, I may say, i I invariably received while acting for the s Government in a difficult position, at a , very trying crisis. I am, Sir, , Your very obedient servant, (Signed) H. R. Russell, Acting Agent for General Government. ' Lieut.-Colonel Lambert, Commanding Napier District. Colonial Defence Office, Wellington, May 1, 1869. Sir, — On relieving the Napier Militia and Volunteers from further duty, you are 1 requosted to inform them that the Governs ment have received with much satisfaction the reports that have been made of the . alacrity and pi*omptitude with which they assembled and marched from their homes , and occupations for the defence of the outsettlers of the province. They have not only undergone severe hardships, but have zealously continued to perform irksome 1 and monotonous duties, which are the most trying to all troops after the first excitement of action has passed away. This is not the first time that tho Napier settlers have proved their readiness and ? ability to rely on themselves and maintain the peace and security of their province, and the Colony will acknowledge that they have shewn an excellent example to all disturbed districts of the Northern Island. I have already expressed by telegram the sense the Government entertain of the i assistance rendered by yourself and ■ Eieut.- Colonel Lambert during the late i emergency. [ I have tho honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient servant, • (Signed) T. M. Haultain. ; H. R.RusseH, Esq., ' Acting for the General Government, [ Napier.
