A singular phenomenon is reported to have occurred lately at East Melbourne. During the thunderstorm which took place there, a shower of worms, varying from two to two and a half inches in length, fell, and in one instance, the windows were covered, and the yard filled with these unusual visitors. The General Assembly. — Several papers in the other Provinces have expressed the opinion that, as is generally supposed, tho supplies granted to the Government are almost exhausted, the General Assembly will have to be summoned to meet in a lew weeks. Wo are not aware that the Government would hesitate to call the Assembly together if occasion demanded such a step "being taken, but at present thero is no likelihood of that measure boing adopted either from the cause alleged, or any othor. — Advertiser. The Founders op Canterbury. — Mr. B. J. Wakefield has published the first volume of a work under tho above title, consisting chiefly of lettors by the late Edward Gibbon Wakefield to Mr. Godley and other distinguished men of tho period. The Nelson Examiner announces that "in the altered state of the Province, arising from dulness of trade," it is deemed advisable to reduce that journal into a biweekly in future. The merit is not in doing extraordinary actions, but in doing ordinary actions extraordinarily well. A cooper, seeing a dandy's finger covered with rings, declared ho must be a weak fellow, or he wouldn't require so many hoops. Three seed-stalks of oats grown in the Eakanui district from a single seed are estimated by the Oamcuru Times to have contained over 1700 grains.
