NATIVE INTELLIGENCE.

News arrived in town, late on Saturday evening, that on Friday last, Bth inst., a large body of Hau Haus had been seen near the head of the Waiau, a tributary of the Wairoa — about 17 or 18 miles from the township of Clyde. This party was seen by some friendlies, one of whom is named Walter, whose cultivations were destroyed by the Hau Haus, his box ransacked, his horses partly killed and partly driven away. On the party of friendlies finding their kainga destroyed, they proceeded to the top of an adjoining hill, whence they observed a large native force encamped. They at once brought the information to Wairoa and Mohaka. The Wairoa natives offered their services to the Government to march against the enemy ; but, the scouts cent out having observed the fires to be considerably nearer Waikaremoana, which would lead to the conclusion that they had withdrawn in that direction, an expedition was not deemed necessary. This may either have been a detached party of Te Kooti's people, who would have had sufficient time to reach that locality from Ngatepa, or a body of Te Waru's men. While such men as Te Kooti, Paoro Toki, Te Waru, Maika, Tokatahi, and many others of equal ferocity are at large, •too much watchfulness cannot be exercised in outlying districts. The same (Saturday) evening, Hohepa and Paora Hape; two Taupo chiefs, accompanied by about 20 of their people, arrived in town. Their object was to obtain, if possible, assistance from the Government in the shape of arms and ammunition— they having received an intimation from the Ureweras, sent subsequently to the evacuation of Ngatepa, that they would not, in future, spare the life of any government native. Simultaneously with the departure for Napier of those chiefs, Poihipi had gone to Tanranga, in the hope of getting assistance from that quarter.
