NELSON.

I THE ELECTION^OR'THE OITY. (From the "Colonist.") Aftee one of the keenest dontests* as far as regards action on the part of both sides, which Nelson has witnessed for a long time, Mr. Nathaniel Edwards has- been elected as member of the House of Representatives for the City by a majority of 88 over his opponent, Mr. Joseph Shephard. It was supposed that the contest would be a very close one, for as the polling day approached, each party expressed itself sure of success, founded on calculations and " careful study" of the roll of voters. Placards ami squibs, containing charges and counter-charges, of some of which we believe the last has not yet been heard, were circulated all over the town ; and respective committee rooms —where relays of cabs and carriages arrived and departed under orders for electors — were the centres of attraction for many. The following is the state of the poll at four o'clock :— Provincial Oddfellows' Total. Hall. Hall. Mr. Edwards ... 187 115 802 Mr. Shephard ... 139 75 214 320 190 516 Majority for Mr. Edwards (the Government candidate), 88.
