The Independent of the 12th inst. has a powerfully Written article on the Poverty Bay massacre, which will be found reprinted in another column. Meanee. — We observe that a meeting to consider the unprotected state of the Meanee district is convened for Thursday next, at the Meanee Hotel, at 3 p.m. Taeeha. — We learn that this chief yesterday offered his services to proceed, with all his men, to assist in impending operations at Poverty Bay. The Yen. Archdeacon Williams remains at the redoubt, Turanganui, where he has shewn an excellent example of courage and hopefulness under most depressing circumstances. The News from Poverty Bay had not reached Auckland at the date of the departure of the Star of the South. The Lord Ashley, however, with the sad intelligence and four of the refugees, was steaming up the harbour as the Star was steaming down. Abmed Constabulary. — A detachment of armed constabulary, 22 strong, arrived on Sunday evening by the Wellington steamer. They landed yesterday morning, and looked a fine body of men. They were immediately placed under orders for Poverty Bay, to which they probably proceeded last evening. House Moving.— The two-story house erected by the Rev. J. Macmichael at Meanee is now being moved to a site on the banks of the river, near the bridge, quite two miles away. Mr. Maney, we believe, has purchased the building and undertaken the formidable work of shifting it. The Third Class Militia were, by proclamation appearing in a Provincial Government Gazette, published yesterday, called out for actual service — to assemble on Thursday next, the 19th inst., at 11 a.m. The object of this is, we believe, that the picket duty may be rendered lighter upon the men of the first and second class, by whom it is now performed exclusively. One effect of this proclamation is to place Capt. Carlyon in command of the Napier district. Napier Races.-— The following are the entries for the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club Cup:— Mr. W. Miller's eh. g.
