ARRIVAL OF THE ENGLISH MAIL VIA PANAMA.
APPALLING EARTHQUAKE IN (PERU AND ECUADOR. [The following, received at a late hour on Thursday evening, was published as a Hebald Extra early yesterday morning.] The Ruahine, steamship, from Panama, arrived in Wellington harbour, on Thursday last, at 5 p.m. The Atrato, from Southampton to Colon, broke down, and had to put back. Hence the delay of the Ruahine. She brings English papers to the 14th, aud news via New York to the 20th August. The following is the list of passengers : — For Wellington— Capt. J. V. Hall, Capt. Blanc It. N., Messrs. Walker, I)erychken, Garling, Russell, Forster, and West, Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, Capt. Handley, Mr. and Mrs. Harris and 5 children. For Canterbury — Messrs. Karslaka, Conn, Gildern, and W. Murray. For Otago. — Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Young, Mr. Catelough. For Nelson. — Messrs. Allen and Fox. For Auckland.— Messrs. Webb, Benbow, Edwards, Norris, and Stephen. For Melbourne. — Messrs. Perry, Enrichkin, Mr. Mrs. and Miss Carnegie. For Sydney. — Mr. Franklin, Mr. and Mrs. Bramston, Messrs. Clate and Gullick, Mr. W. Manghan and infant.
