Rifle Match. — We understand that the Rifle Match— -Petane v. Napier Rifle Club — : wili take place (weather permitting) at Petane, on Thursday next, September 17, at 10 o'clock a.m.

The Napiee Brass Band will play the Constabulary force on board the Sturt this day. They were practising last night, and the effect was very good.

New Insolvents. — Robert Brenton and John Sim have filed the usual declaration that they are unable to meet their engagements.

Lieut. -Colonel Whitmobe is said to have gone overland to Wanganui, en route for the front. Rumour says he was accompanied by Capt. St. George.

English Mail. — The Otago, with the English mail via Suez, arrived from Melbourne at the Bluff on Thursday last, the 10th instant.

Artesian Wells. — A fine well, 109 feet in depth, has lately been bottomed on Mr. Oliver's farm, Meanee. One is also being driven on Mr. Tuke's property, in the same locality — both by Mr. Lord.

The Mounted Constabulary are, upon their arrival in Wellington, to be inspected by His Excellency the Governor, preparatory to their departure for Patea. We are sure they will bear inspection ; a smarter lot of fellows are not often to be seen.

Kaikoba. — From an advertisement which has appeared in the Herald it will have been learned that a meeting will be held at Kaikora, on Monday next, for the laudable purpose of forming a joint stock company to erect a flour mill in the neighborhood.-

Land Pubchasing. — Negociations for the sale to the local government of that part of the ,40-mile bush that lies in this province, comprising about 300,000 acres, have lately been conducted by Mr. Locke with the native proprietors. We understand that a conditional sale has been agreed to, and that a member of the survey staff ■will at- once be despatched to mark out the external boundaries of the block. ■

Tenders are invited by the Provincial Government (1) for making about 50 chains of road through the Pohuißush, and building 5 small bridges between Pohui and the church crossing of the Mohaka river — in two contracts ; — (2) for building two small bridges and making side cuttings on the new line of road from Petane by Pukeretai to Tongoio 5 — (3) for making 80 chains of the road between the Toll-gate and Waitangi — in 2 contracts ; — (4) for 5200 feet timber for a bridge over Homewood creek. — See Advertisements.

Ahmed ConstabuiiAEY. — On Wednesday, part of this force crossed the entrance, en route to their new camp, Petane — the remainder to follow next day. Early on Thursday, however, a telegram from Colonel Haultain was received by Major Fraser, ordering himself and force to hold themselves in readiness to take their departure for Patea on Friday, by the p.s. Sturt, which was under orders for Napier. The news caused on the part of the population a wide-spread feeling of alarm and indignation. Part of the order received was that Capt, Tuke should remain behind, and do his best to raise a foot constabulary force of 25 men.

Later from Wairoa. — On Wednesday afternoon a mounted trooper arrived from Wairoa. The newa is to the effect that a friendly native had gone to the camp at Puketapu in order to get one of his own relatives, who was among their number, away, but he did not succeed. He brought intelligence that the escaped prisoners were planting potatoes, and that, as he had been informed, the bodies of Captain Carr and Lieut. Canning were lying unburied. It was further stated that another party of friendly natives had gone to Puketapu on a similar errand, and had expressed an intention, if possible, of getting the bodies decently interred.
