Reported Discovert of a New Gold Field.— The West Coast Times of August 6, has the following :— Yesterday startling rumours were circulated in town to the effect that a large parcel of coarse gold had been disposed of to one of the banks by a party of foreigners, who stated that they had found it high up in the ranges, close to the snow line, and furthermore added that it lay on a main bottom, in nine feet sinking. We give this for what it is worth, with the remark that between thirty and forty diggers were seen wending their way up the Hokitika river yesterday morning, that being the indicated direction of the discovery. We shall take the earliest measures to find out the truth or falsehood of this report, which, if true, will be welcome. The Observer of August 7, says : — We have been favored with the following particulars of the reported find of gold at the foot of the dividing range, by a gentleman in whose veracity we place implicit confidence. Our informant states that the day before yesterday, an old friend of his— an Italian — shewed liim a sample of gold which he had obtained from a place above the Kanieri. He stated that he obtained the gold, which was a splendid sample, being nuggety and mixed with quartz, at a depth of nine feet ; but gave no description of the nature oi the sinking. He refused to divulge the locality, but stated that when he left snow was lying on the ground, and that if a good track were cut to it, he believed a payable field would be opened up. Several of the prospector's fellow countrymen were " laid on." yesterday, and have prpceededjto the spot.
