The Art Union drawing, came off, as announced, oh Thursday last. The first prize fell to the lot of Joseph Rhodes, Esq. The Snider Rifle. — Within the last few clays the detachment of troops stationed here has been supplied with the Snider rifle. Tenders are required for making 72 chains of the beach road between Napier and Petano, to be given in on or before the 13th June. Major-General Chute was expected to arrive in Napier last evening, for the purpose of inspecting the detachment of the 18 th stationed here. The Potatoes generously sent to town by Tareha on Monday last, for general consumption, were distributed in course of Tuesday morning — a brisk demand for them having set in from an early hour. The whole, consisting of 285 kits, were delivered to 152 applicants, and the distribution was completed by 1 p.m. the same day. "Well-Boring at Waipukuratj. — The attempt to obtain an Artesian well at Wai-pukm-au has, for the present, failed. At a depth of 80 feet a hard gravel conglomerate was encountered, which neither the pipes nor any tools 'the party had could penetrate. Mr.. ; RusseU ? hoWeyer, has'.e,x-' pressed his cleterWnaiion 'iff', procu^a£oi-

<■ injg apparatus, as he means to have an Artesian well upon his property. In course of sinking, a water bed was encountered, but .not the real one, as there was riot sufficient / force to bring the water to the top of the ;pipe. We understand that Lord is about ■-."'; to". put. down pipes for Mr. Russell at the , Little Bush, and, afterwards, to make an f attempt on Mr. Dolbel's farm. The Provincial Council is summoned to meet on Tuesday next, June 2, at 3 p.m. Bank Holiday.— Monday next, being _% Whit Monday, will be observed as a holiday at the banks. '. ,M». Ebward Lyndon will sell, this day,a quantity of furniture, potatoes, and other articles;; also, stock-in-trade of Mr. J. Robottom. A Provincial Government Gazette, published on Wednesday last, contains abstract of receipts .and expenditure for quarter ended 31st March 1868. Hl3 Excellency Sir G. Bowen and Lady Bowen, we understand, may be expected to arrive in Napier the first week in June. Their stay will probably extend over two or three days. The Boring for Water in Napier, contrary to expectation, is yet without result. Yesterday the pipe was driven three feet further down, or 187 feet in all, and the chisel forced down 16 feet below the tube —reaching a depth of 203 feet— without flow of water. On withdrawing the chisel, however, sand followed immediately, and, evidently forced up, filled up 60 or 70 feet of the pipe. The tedious process of cleaning out had then to be. gone ov.er. The only satisfaction in the matter is that it was probably the* vicinity of the water that caused this; extraordinary underground pressure, and that success, therefore, may be close, at hand. . Government Land Sale.-— At a sale at the Crown Lands Office on Wednesday, May 27, town section No. 333, Clyde, was . knocked down at the upset price, £5, to Mr. Atward. Suburban sections 845, 846, and 847, each containing 3 acres, were not bid for. Suburban section No. 101, Porangab.au, containing 23 acres, was bought by Mr. George Hunter at the upset price, £46. Suburban section No. 1, Waitangi, containing 2 acres, was knocked down to Mr. Francon at the upset price, £10. For Suburban sections 2 to 32, same extent and upset price, no bids were made.
