SYDNEY.
[Telegraphic intelligence via Melbourne.] April 5 th. Two hawkers named Pohlrnan have been murdered near Wagga Wagga, and their bodies burned in the scrub. The sculls were left perfect. Their horses were stolen, but the dray and £200 worth of property were left. The Prince entertained the members of the Assembly at luncheon on board the Galatea to-day. The Steam Navigation Board report that the loss of the steamer Telegraph was occasioned by the neglect of the captain and mates. Mr. Aspinall and Mr. Pavey are making strenuous exertions to obtain a commuta- . tion of O'Farrell's sentence. H.M.S. Brisk sailed for Wellington with despatches,, on the arrival of the Panama mail. The attention of the Government has been called in the Assembly to the •advisability of terminating the Panama mail contract. The wool sales have been brisk, and late rates have been maintained. The Prince planted two memorial trees in the Botanical gardens yesterday, and afterwards attended a large dinner party at Government house. The Galatea sails positively on Monday. The University commemoration takes place to-morrow. The Prince is expected to attend. • Messrs. iVmos & Co.'s (of Melbourne) tender for No. 4 contract on the Northern Railway has been accepted at £88,773. The Panama niail contract has been laid before the Assembly. The date of O'Farrell' s execution is not fixed. The Prince laid the foundation-stone of the new Town Hall at noon. The ceremony was supposed to be private, but hundreds of persons obtained admittance, and there was enthusiastic cheering. A farewell luncheon is to be given at Government House at noon on Monday. The principal colonists have been invited. The Executive meets on Monday, to consider O'FarreH's case.
