CANTERBURY.

me. mooehouse's eesignation. The Canterbury Provincial Council was prorogued on Thursday the 9th inst. At the end of the prorogation speech, Mr, Moorhouse, the Superintendent, said t — " If I may be permitted I will say one or two words of a personal import. The public is advised by this time that it is my intention to retire from office, and I take this opportunity of making public a yery useful fact as far as I am concerned — that I definitely close my career as a provincial politician with my retirement from office ; and I have the gratification of expressing the very great obligations I feel to those gentlemen, who, during a course of years, have been_good enough to join wi tli me iu-tlKrlabors of office, and of stating that, without exception ever since I have been Superintendent, I have received the most cordial co-operation from, all those who have been associated with me." Mr. Bowen lias received several numerously signed requisitions, asking him to allow himself to be nominated for the Superintendency. THE STJPERINTENJDENCY. The Lyttdton Times of the 13th instant, says : — The intimation that Mr. Bowen declines to stand for the Superintendency -will, if vre mistake not, cause considerable regret. Nor will the reason given for the refusal serve in any way to diminish the regret. At a time when it is peculiarly neoessary that the province should be well governed, we might have secured the services of a gentleman in whom the public has reason to repose the greatest confidence, if we had been prepared to give an adequate remuneration for those services. But the Government decides that we are not in such a position, and so Mr. Bowen 's services are lost to the province. [The salary of the Superintendent of Canterbury was lately reduced from £1500 £600 per annum.] ITAOBI ELECTION. The Canterbury Press says : — The nomination of candidates to represent the Southern Maori interest, took place at St. Stephens, to the left of the pah near Woodend. The attendance of visitors was small, but there were between eighty and one hundred Maoris, besides women and children. About half-past twelve, Mr. Mackay opened the proceedings of the day by explaining the formula of the election. He read the notice in the Gazette, and the writ for the election, and then, called on the natives to nominate their candidates. George Peter Matu stepped forward and proposed Thomas Green, a half-caste, as a fit and proper person to represent the Southern Maori electoral district. His nomination was seconded by Hopa Pauru. Ihaia Tainui proposed George Peter Matu as a fit and proper person but he declined to stand. Peti To Hori proposed Wi Naheha. He-ruu-e Makaika seconded the nomination. The Hey. Te Koto proposed Paratene Tamaaui a Eangi, and Hbani, TJra seconded the nomination. No other proposal being made, a show of hands was taken as follows :— Wi Nahera, 35 ; Green, 28 ; Paratene, 10. A poll was demanded by Green, which takes place ou the sth May, at Kaiapoi, Reupaki, Moeraki, Arowhenua, Otepoti, Awarua, Blenheim, Greymouth, Hiverton, Akaroa, and Naru. The poll will be declaimed in June. EXECUTION OF SWALE. ' From a telegram in the Evening Post of the 16th inst., we learn :— The wretched man, Swale, sentenced to death for burning a dwelling-house in which his partner in business, Kankin, met his death, was hanged at 8 o'clock this morning, inside Lyttelton Gaol. The scaffold was draped in black, and there was no crowd anxious to witness the last dread agonies of a fel-low-creature! He made no confession, tvud was, to all appearance, seemiugly unmoved, and more unconcerned than thoge whose duties made their presence imperative on the melancholy occasion.
